The 7th Annual World Patient Safety, Science & Technology Summit was co-convened by the American Society of Anesthesiologists and the European Society of Anaesthesiology. The 2019 Summit gathered international hospital leaders, medical and information technology companies, the patient advocacy community, public policy makers and government officials, who discussed solutions to the leading challenges that cause preventable patient deaths in hospitals worldwide.
The Summit featured keynote addresses from public figures, patient safety experts and plenary sessions with healthcare luminaries, members of the press and patient advocates, as well as announcements from organizations who have made their own commitments to reach the Patient Safety Movement Foundation’s goal of ZERO preventable deaths by 2020.

The following challenge was selected during the Midyear Planning Meeting as a new patient safety challenge. The Patient Safety Movement Foundation will address the challenge by convening a workgroup to build an Actionable Patient Safety Solutions (APSS) that can be implemented in hospitals to reduce preventable in-hospital mortality.
Every year the Patient Safety Movement Foundation identifies the most influential advocates in patient safety and honors them with the Humanitarian Award at the annual World Patient Safety, Science & Technology Summit. This award recognizes leaders who have made significant progress in eliminating preventable patient deaths so that we can reach our shared goal of ZERO preventable deaths.
The awards are given in memory of two men, Beau Biden and Steven Moreau, who are no longer with us physically. Both of them had boundless passion for making the world a better place, no matter what obstacles they faced. Each of our awards will be given in their names because ZERO is not just a worthy goal but an attainable one.
The 2019 Summit was held at the stunning Hyatt Regency Huntington Beach Resort & Spa, situated across the street from one of California’s best beaches, Huntington Beach. Events took place Friday and Saturday, January 18-19, 2019.
