Letter from the Chairman, December 2018

Dear Readers,

This is the last eNewsletter in 2018, so take this time to recognize that you still have the opportunity to make a difference this year if you haven’t taken action yet. Each of us have a role to play in the advancement of patient safety.
We made amazing progress in November thanks to many of you. I’d like to briefly reflect on two achievements:

  1.  I’d like to again recognize UCI Health as the 1st academic hospital to receive 5-Star Hospital Ranking – congratulations Dr. Wilson and your team for going the extra mile for your patients.
  2. We raised over $110,649 in our first ever Giving Tuesday campaign, #Shoot4ZERO. Thank you to everyone who participated in our social media challenges and those who donated throughout the month.

Our Spotlight this month is a success story from Emory University Hospital in Atlanta, Georgia. This top-tier hospital has worked to eliminate infections system-wide. This month, we speak with Patient Safety Officer, Dr. David J. Murphy. Dr. Murphy shares the hospital’s action plan and their impressive results. Among the takeaways, by implementing a healthcare-associated infections quality acceleration team (HAIQAT) they brought together leaders across the system including leaders of individual hospitals, front line leaders and subject matter experts. I encourage you to read the article and learn more about how they saved lives and money! To learn more about our six Actionable Patient Safety Solutions (APSS) focused on HAIs, click here. Please download and implement them all. We can’t get to ZERO if hospitals implement just one, or even two; all 6 and in fact, all 16 APSS have to be implemented.

Please remember, no matter who you are, you can help us reach ZERO. If you have questions about how you can join us, please reach out to Sarah Miller who can help identify how your organization can be part of this movement.

We hope to see you next month at the 7th Annual World Patient Safety, Science & Technology Summit.
