Spotlight on Lori Stromness, RN

Letter from the Chairman, January 2018

Greetings and happy new year!

The start of the new year is always an exciting and busy time… Everyone is making their new year’s resolutions. Yours may include getting your hospital to make a commitment to zero. We found that change only happens when you “plan” for zero instead of expecting someone elseto do it, or just “hoping” for it.

We look forward to seeing you February 23-25 at our 6th annual World Patient Safety, Science & Technology Summit. This year’s Summit is in London co-organized with the support of the Department of Health, England and co-convened with the European Society of Anaesthesiology (ESA). I am excited to announce that among the featured speakers will be Rt. Hon. Jeremy Hunt, the UK’s Secretary of State for Health, as well as Sir Liam Donaldson of the World Health Organization and Stefan De Hert of the ESA. We will also be announcing the three winners of the 2018 Patient Safety Innovation Awards, and of course my favorite, the Humanitarian awards.

In this month’s Spotlight feature, we will be highlighting Lori Stromness, RN, a long-time nurse at Intermountain. She took the lead on Intermountain’s Foley catheter team and grew it into a highly successful collaborative effort among Intermountain’s staff. They were able to show that an innovative idea can foster a culture of safety across floors and create a model that can be replicated globally. Her results are getting attention from clinicians around the world.

There is still time to register for the Summit, but as prior summits, we expect it to sell out soon, so please do not wait. Every year, we have attendees trying to register last minute and unfortunately, due to space restraints we are not able to accommodate them. Registration closes January 23, 2018!

I look forward to seeing you all next month in London! Cheers!
