Letter from the Chairman, February 2019
My heart is full from seeing many of you at our 7th Annual World Patient Safety, Science & Technology Summit just a few weeks ago, seeing that many of you are planning for zero, not just hoping for zero. If you weren’t able to join us for the Summit, or you did but want to re-watch the incredible sessions of world patient safety experts, all of the sessions are now available on YouTube for you to watch and share with your colleagues.
I encourage you to keep the momentum. We need you to implement all of our Actionable Patient Safety Solutions (APSS). We’ve identified over 16 Actionable patient Safety Solutions that you can implement to get to ZERO. Please look at them all. They have been updated. Look at the Executive Summary and mark the boxes green for what you are doing and yellow and red for what you are not doing and come up with a mitigation strategy to turn the yellows and reds to green.
Everyone I spoke with at the Summit, said they were ready to implement all of the APSS! Parrish Medical Center, University of California Irvine Health, Children Hospital of Orange County and Hospital Español have implemented all of the APSS. Ask them; it is possible. They are the first to achieve Patient Safety Movement’s 5-Star hospital rating by implementing all of the APSS. I hope we can celebrate all of you implementing all of the APSS at our next Summit.
We have one year left to get to zero preventable deaths. We can still do it. Imagine if we didn’t have to tell another mom, dad, or child that their son or daughter or mother and father have died from a medical error. If every hospital implemented all of the APSS, we could reach zero. Help us reach our mission, the only humane mission.
Plan for Zero. You can do it.
