Tom Kallstrom is the Chief Executive Officer and Executive Director of the American Association for Respiratory Care (AARC) in Irving Texas, and the Executive Vice President of the American Respiratory Care Foundation (ARCF). His respiratory career spans many decades. He began as a staff therapist at the University of Minnesota Hospitals and later Department Manager at Rainbow Babies and Children’s Hospital and later administrative director at Fairview Hospital, which is part of the Cleveland Clinic Health System in Cleveland, Ohio. Many of his interests revolve around pediatrics, chronic pulmonary disease management, and patient safety. It is in these areas that he has spoken and published several papers and book chapters on these topics. He also served in various capacities on several AARC committees as well as the AARC Board of Directors, the National Heart, Lung, & Blood Institute’s (NHLBI), National Asthma Education and Prevention Program (NAEPP).Kallstrom developed and implemented disease management programs both in home care and in acute care focused on asthma and COPD. Through these programs, unplanned physician visits, emergency room visits, admissions, and readmissions to the hospital were dramatically reduced. Today, as CEO and Executive Director of the AARC, he continues to ensure that respiratory therapists have the support and tools necessary to provide best practice of patient care and patient education so that patients are better equipped to self-manage their disease.
