Patient Advocate

President, Washington Advocates for Patient Safety

Yanling Yu is co-founder and President of non-profit organization Washington Advocates for Patient Safety. She became a patient safety advocate after her father died from preventable medical errors. Yanling has focused her work on promoting quality of care and safety, healthcare transparency, patient-centered care, and patient and family engagement.

Yanling is currently serving on the AHRQ National Advisory Council to assist the agency’s efforts to use research and evidence to improve quality of care and safety. She is a member on the Patient Safety Standing Committee of National Quality Forum and the Washington State Healthcare-associated Infection Advisory Committee.  She served on a recent IHI subcommittee to create a national action plan for patient and family engagement by establishing the practice of co-designing and co-producing care with patients, families, and care partners to ensure their meaningful partnership in all aspects of care design, delivery, and operations.  As a member of the teaching faculty for Train-The-Trainer and the national TeamSTEPPS programs at the University of Washington School of Medicine and School of Nursing, she has been involved with interprofessional education and teamwork training. To help patients and families actively engage in their own health care and to improve their communication with providers, she conducts free public workshops at public libraries on patient safety.
